Free Game Friday: Jables’s Adventure
This game has been getting a fair amount of attention lately, and rightly so. As games like Minecraft have shown us, the simplest of concepts can appeal to the widest possible audience. Jajitsu’s Jables’s Adventure packs adorable graphics, a sharp wit, and easy to learn controls into a pleasing gameplay experience right from the first moments you spend with it.
You’re simply a boy named Jables who wakes up with a squid on his head, telling him he’s the hero and he needs to go on an adventure. Jables is very agreeable, and immediately sets out with the squid on his head to be the hero of the game. You receive a weapon of sorts, though much of your time is spent jumping to avoid obstacles; the game is a fairly true platformer, but contains some action adventure undertones, spicing up the dish it offers.
With only about an hour or so of gameplay, it’s hardly a time investment, but I found myself initially confused by the save system, which got me off to a rough start and left me feeling pretty stupid shortly thereafter. Just remember these words of wisdom: The kid you slap at the beginning is a save point.
The scenery is amazing for how simple the game is, and you’re rather seamlessly introduced to caves, forests, and narwhal lairs as you and your head-squid venture forth to save the world. Or something. Isn’t that what heroes do?
