Weekly Deals: August 6, 2010

This week–no, this month–we’re restless and ready to get the ball rolling on all these awesome things we keep teasing you about. But as the saying goes, with great awesome comes great responsibility (..that’s totally how the saying goes), and while we’ve got the former in the bag, the latter likes to bite us in the butt every now and then. Fortunately for you, there are some pretty spectacular deals this week, including one in everyone’s favorite price range of “free” that we did not expect to see.
Privates: Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
You remember that little game we mentioned awhile back with the condom hats? Where they travel through some naughty bits and shoot guns at sexually transmitted diseases? Yeah, that little game. Well that little game is conveniently named Privates, and it’s now available for you to play! But the best part of all is that Privates is completely free, which neither of us expected. It’s hilarious and nasty and very educational, all in one awesome indie package. It’s also very British. We’ve both been playing, and you should, too.
Machinarium: Pirate Amnesty Sale
As many of you may know, I’m a huge fan of Amanita Design and anything they’ve had their creatively charged paws on. By extension, I’m also a huge fan of their biggest game to date, Machinarium, a gorgeous adventure game which is usually priced at $20. From now until August 12th, Amanita is offering Machinarium for sale on their website for the unbeatable price of just $5! As a bonus, you get the soundtrack for free. In addition, their composer, the talented Tomas Dvorak has composed a brand new song just for this occasion. It’s available for free download from their site, whether you choose to buy the game or not. But if you don’t already own the title, I would recommend that you choose to buy it.
Digital Distribution
While there aren’t a whole lot of brand new titles hitting the figurative shelves this week, there are some worthwhile sales from the various digital distribution platforms available for your playing pleasure.
GamersGate is having a month long Summer Sale, with a different theme each week. This week is RPG Week, which is right up my alley. Indie offerings in this week’s sale include the King’s Bounty series, the Mount & Blade series, and a fan favorite around these parts, Torchlight.
The King’s Bounty titles are 75% off, putting both at under $10, but you can opt to buy the King’s Bounty Gold Edition bundle, also 75% off and thus only $10 itself, and get both games for the price of one.
Torchlight, meanwhile, is only $5 and considering the hours of enjoyment and mountains of equipment to be had in this awesome little title, it’s well worth the price if you’re somehow the only person left on the planet who hasn’t picked it up yet. It may not feature co-operative play, but Runic Games has finally announced Torchlight 2 (not to be confused with the Torchlight MMO) which will have co-operative play, so you should brush up your dungeon crawling skills now on the original.
Steam is offering the aptly named Gratuitous Space Battles and its DLC for 75% off their usual prices. You can buy each separately for less than $5 a piece, or buy the Gratuitous Collectors Edition for $6.24.
Power of Defense is $8.99 for its launch week if you purchase before August 11th. It’s a robot-centric strategy game which features a single player campaign, multiplayer support, and our favorite part, 14 Steam achievements.
Definitely take advantage of these deals before they’re gone, and don’t even try to make any excuses about not playing Privates. We hope you have a great week filled with amazing games, and we’ll see you again quicker than you think!
